ESD Standards
When developing an ESD control program plan and establishing ESD protection areas (EPAs), it is essential to follow applicable international standards and guidelines.
Protection of Sensitive Electronic Components
Consistent implementation of the following standard ensures that sensitive electronic components are reliably protected.
In particular, the current version of the DIN EN 61340-5-1 (2017-07 edition) plays a central role in this regard. This standard applies to all activities involving so-called ESDS (Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive Devices) – that is, components that are particularly sensitive to electrostatic discharge – are manufactured, processed, assembled, installed, packaged, labeled, maintained, tested, or inspected. Any other handling of these components also falls within the scope of the standard.
Of particular importance here is taking into account the Sensitivity limits: The standard applies to ESDS with a sensitivity of at least 100 volts according to the Human Body Model (HBM), 200 volts according to the Charged Device Model (CDM) as well as 35 volts for insulated conductors. This means that even relatively low electrostatic voltages can be enough to permanently damage electronic components or impair their functionality.
That is why it is essential to plan, implement, and continuously review appropriate protective measures at an early stage. An ESD control program that complies with standards not only ensures safety in the production process but is also a key element in quality assurance and the successful certification of companies in sensitive areas of electronics manufacturing.
